Operating Authority: What Trucking Companies Need to Know

Certain for-hire interstate motor carriers require operating authority in addition to a USDOT Number. The authority required depends on the type of transportation and cargo or passengers being transported. Official reference: https://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/registration/getting-your-operating-authority

  1. Determine whether authority is required. Review your operation, transportation type, and business model against FMCSA operating authority requirements.
  2. Confirm your USDOT registration. Make sure the company has the applicable USDOT registration and accurate company information.
  3. Apply for the applicable authority. Submit the appropriate operating authority request through the current FMCSA registration process.
  4. Complete financial responsibility requirements. Maintain the insurance or financial responsibility requirements applicable to your authority.
  5. Complete BOC-3 when required. For applicable authorities, ensure the required designation of process agents is filed.
  6. Verify active status. Do not assume authority is active merely because an application was submitted; verify the applicable FMCSA status.
