How to Determine Whether You Need a USDOT Number

  1. Identify your operation. Determine whether you operate commercial motor vehicles and whether your operation falls under federal or state commercial vehicle requirements.
  2. Review the FMCSA requirements. Use FMCSA registration guidance to determine whether your operation requires a USDOT Number.
  3. Check for additional registrations. Determine whether you also need operating authority, UCR, insurance filings, permits, or other registrations.
  4. Create your Motus account. Use the current FMCSA Motus system to create the required profile and company account.
  5. Keep the record current. Update registration information when required and complete applicable biennial updates.
