Annual DOT Vehicle Inspection Compliance Guide

FMCSA requires an annual inspection of each commercial motor vehicle, performed by a qualified inspector, with the report kept on file. Official reference: 49 CFR §396.17 - https://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/regulations/title49/section/396.17

  1. Confirm inspection due date. Track the last annual inspection date for every vehicle in the fleet.
  2. Select a qualified inspector. Use a qualified inspector meeting the applicable FMCSA requirements.
  3. Complete the inspection. Inspect all required systems and components covered by the annual inspection standard.
  4. Document results. Complete and sign the inspection report with all required information.
  5. Correct deficiencies. Repair any identified defects before the vehicle returns to service, and keep repair records.
  6. File and retain the report. Keep the inspection report in the vehicle or readily available, per the applicable retention period.
