Hours-of-Service Compliance Guide for Truck Drivers

Hours-of-Service rules limit driving and on-duty time for covered drivers. Carriers should build a process that combines driver education, log review, supporting documents, and corrective action. Official reference: 49 CFR Part 395 - https://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/regulations/hours-of-service

  1. Identify the applicable HOS rule. Determine which federal HOS provisions and applicable exemptions apply to the driver and operation.
  2. Train the driver. Make sure drivers understand driving limits, duty status requirements, breaks, and applicable exceptions.
  3. Review records of duty status. Review logs and supporting documents for violations, missing information, and inconsistent records.
  4. Correct recurring problems. Coach drivers and supervisors when recurring HOS errors are identified.
  5. Maintain audit-ready records. Keep required logs and supporting records according to applicable retention requirements.
